The designer duo Ernest W. Baker opened the doors of their studio – number 54 of Praça da Corujeira, in the eastern part of Porto – on the third day of the 51st edition of Portugal Fashion. Inês Amorim and Reid Baker were present to show the public the collection for next season, as well as the brand’s archive.
The pieces for the upcoming hot season bring some novelties, such as the use of yellow. This is because, explains Inês Amorim, they wanted to look at “classic clothing through the eyes of a child. We made a black tuxedo, but with shorts. And some overalls”.
The inspirational presence of rain is again present, and is recovered by a fabric that mimics the drops of water. Roses also reappear in crochets handmade by artisans. “In all the collections we get our signature, elements that identify us. It’s always a process”, summarizes the brand’s creator.
The Ernest W. Baker brand has evolved since 2017, with a sense of nostalgia about menswear and with the rose as its symbol, which says a lot to both creators. “It’s a strong flower, but fragile at the same time,” the creator recalls. “From the beginning we have used it in prints, jacquards and crochet. It’s a romantic, poetic thing we wanted to bring to the brand”, Reid adds.
The designers have already dressed celebrities such as Harry Styles, Justin Bieber and the South Korean band BTS. They have been in their new studio in Porto since February and produce all the pieces in Portugal. They believe that the quality of what is done nationally makes them almost ambassadors of national fashion in countries like South Korea, the United States and Canada.
