The laureates were announced after an online vote from the public. The international panel of judges made up of 36 members was responsible for the final selection of 13 laureates from the 25 previously nominated.

This contest, organised by the fashion institution of Marseille, is open to designers from Albania, Algeria, Cyprus, Croatia, Egypt, Slovenia, Spain, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey. The MMM OpenMyMed Prize is open to designers who have launched at least two collections. One of the main aims is to support the winners in the implementation, strategy and communication of their work on the international market.

This is not the first time that Portuguese talent has been honoured in this competition. Besides Katty Xiomara this year, young designers Luís Carvalho and Susana Bettencourt were also able to make it on to the shortlist in previous contests. Bettencourt won the 2017 contest, and Luís Carvalho the 2018 contest.
