MUDE – Museum of Design and Fashion – presented at Casa do Design, in Porto, the exhibition “Portugal Pop: Fashion in Portuguese. 1970-2020”. The show brings together pieces that reflect a retrospective of half a century of national history, combining fusions of the new and the old. The opening of the exhibition resulted as a soft opening for the third day of Portugal Fashion’s 50th edition – March 18 – and includes pieces from designers who also presented their collections at the fashion show, such as Alexandra Moura and Alves/Gonçalves.
According to Bárbara Coutinho, director of MUDE, “Portugal Pop” shows the influence of cultural traditions and the collective identity of “being Portuguese”, allowing a look at national fashion from the eve of the 1974 Revolution to the present day. The pieces “sprout” from cork and rope cores that recall the culture’s connections to the land and the sea.
«Fashion today is experiencing a moment in which it is being rethought on a global scale for its entire dimension as a phenomenon and industry», explains Bárbara Coutinho. The exhibition rethinks the use of materials with history, promoting sustainable thinking and ecological awareness, as part of a circular economy.
The exhibition will be at Casa do Design, in Matosinhos, between September 19 and 20, 2022. It is a co-production between Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos / esad-idea, Investigação em Design e Arte and Câmara Municipal de Lisboa / MUDE.
