On Saturday, March 18, the Municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta brought to Portugal Fashion the handmade silk, which is unique in the country. Throughout the day, a live performance was held at the World of Wine (WOW), in Vila Nova de Gaia, by Freixo’s artisans, who presented the handmade silk process. The development of this value-added partnership made it possible to create an impactful presentation, with public visibility for one day, available to all WOW visitors.

The charming moment, with strong visual impact and live performance by the artisans highlighted the unique authenticity of the art of silk production. The experience was extended to gastronomy with wines, olive oils and sweets from Freixo de Espada à Cinta, in a tasting moment that preceded the networking lunch.

The presentation was part of Portugal Fashion’s strategy to approach projects with traditions of high differentiation potential. The strategy is based on the way of life and the art of doing good that, associated with a fashion event, gains a different dimension, with greater visibility and the possibility of leverage for other ‘creative territories’.

With partnerships like this, “Portugal Fashion helps to publicize a traditional activity and our country, highlighting the quality of national know-how and the potential that can result from the approach of this activity with the creativity of designer fashion,” says Mónica Neto, director of Portugal Fashion.

Freixo de Espada à Cinta is the only municipality in the country and possibly the only one on the Iberian Peninsula where silk is still produced and worked 100% by hand. Here, industrious craftswomen raise the silkworm and develop the entire process of preparing the thread until it is ready to be used in looms and give rise to unique pieces of great value. Throughout this process, artisanal instruments and ancestral methods passed down from one generation to the next are used to keep alive the silk tradition in Freixo de Espada à Cinta.
