From September 2 to November 1, Cinema Batalha will be exploring a thematic programme on fashion that addresses the importance of dressing in cinema and goes through the creations of important designers and brands.

Curated by Guilherme Blanc, Hanayrá Negreiros and João Sousa Cardoso, “Sobre-vestir: Histórias de Cinema e Moda” brings together ten sessions, introduced by short exercises on fashion, which try to explain the importance of wardrobe in the construction of film genres, from horror to historical drama.

The cycle involves the work of authors whose creations have left an indelible mark on various filmographies, such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Yohji Yamamoto and Emi Wada, and the way in which clothing is used as a statement of conflicts – of traditions, customs and cultures.

The first session will take place on 2 September at 9.15pm, with the screening of Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, which will be preceded by the screening of the short film La Défile, directed by Marc Caro with Jean-Paul Gaultier.

On the 3rd, Ôrí, by Raquel Gerber and Beatriz Nascimento, will be screened, with a conversation between performer and model Dori Nigro and fashion researcher, writer and curator Hanayrá Negreiros.

Until 1 November, works such as Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Touki Bouki and Lynn Hershman Leeson’s feminist work Teknolust will be on show. Also Derek Jarman’s Jubilee, a film that brought the punk aesthetic of the 1970s to the film industry, Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising and Akira Kurosawa’s Ran.

On Sunday 22 October, Vanitas, Paulo Rocha’s penultimate film, will also be screened, followed by a talk with Regina Guimarães. Also on 19 September, at 7.15pm, fashion designer Ana Salazar will join curator João Sousa Cardoso in a conversation that will cover topics such as fashion, cinema, the moving image and their interconnection.

The full programme can be found on Cinema Batalha’s official website.
